There has been another charge arising out of Operation Sacha – the Metropolitan Police Service investigation into allegations of perverting the course of justice relating to Operation Weeting and Operation Elveden. On 3 May 2013 the CPS announced that David Johnson, from Mitcham in Surrey, former bodyguard to Rebekah Brooks is to be charged with conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.
The charge is in the following terms:
“On a day between 15 July 2011 and 19 July 2011, conspired together with Rebekah Brooks, Charles Brooks, Mark Hanna, Lee Sandell, Daryl Jorsling and Paul Edwards, and with persons unknown, to do an act or a series of acts, which had a tendency to pervert the course of public justice, namely to conceal computers and other items from officers of the Metropolitan police service who were investigating allegations of phone hacking and corruption of public officials in relation to the News of the World and the Sun newspapers.”
Mr Johnson will appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on 8 May 2013.
There are reports of the charge in a number of newspapers including the Guardian , the Times and the Telegraph.
Operation Sacha, which was established in May 2012, is one of a number of police operations arising out of allegations of wrongdoing by individuals working for or associated with News Group Newspapers Limited. Operation Weeting relates to mobile phone message interception, Operation Elveden to corrupt payments to public officials, Operation Tuleta to data intrusion offences. Operation Kilo was established to look into leaks from the phone-hacking investigation. The BBC has a list of arrests from Operations Weeting, Elveden and Tuleta up to 14 March 2013. More recently Operation Pinetree was set up to investigate a second alleged conspiracy at the News of the World and Operation Golding to investigate allegations of phone hacking at Mirror newspapers.
